Lithogrphy on Clay

East High School had one week in-between TCAP testing and spring break this year.  We took this oppertunity to practice a unique method of layering mason inks and linseed oil onto a toner- printed image and transferring the image to clay. Many of the students were extremely successful with their transfers!

The Animated House Project

Project's Objective: Design plans and create a 3D sculpture that was inspired by a home.  The piece must be at least 6"x6"and incorporate 2 elements of design.  All methods of clay building (pinch, coil, slab, and pottery's wheel) are encouraged.

The Cajita Assignment- the lidded box

High school years help us understand our identity!

In this project, students will reflect and analyze their individual and cultural identity and communicate these attributes visually through their lidded vessel creation.  Each thrown or hand-built container will show the artist's passions, traditions, culture, and spirit.  Students will brainstorm their ideas in their sketchbooks, create their conceptual art, and critique their finished artwork with peers. Here are some of the students' creations!

Examples of Student Sketchbooks

After viewing artwork from the socially conscious Harlem Renaissance collage artist, Romare Bearden.  Ceramics I students created a collage covered sketchbook that reflected their identity as influenced by their environment.

What is Art?

Art is perception, it is an experience which evokes thoughts and emotions.
Art gives our eyes an opportunity to discover and our minds inspiration to think.
Art allows our words and thoughts to be translated into images, a dialogues between the artist and the viewer.

Art is an expression of the imagination!

"Art allows us to reconnect with our inner spirit which is rich in thoughts, feelings, and dreams."  -mary boone, gallery owner and director

I asked the students, "If Art is defined as an individual's expression of a culture, is ceramics an art?"
Ceramics One students responded...

"Of course, anything that you can create is art."-Emma
"I believe so because you are building something with your imagination"- Evelyn
"Yes because you are expressing yourself."- Garrett
"When it isn't assigned it's art." -Daisy
"Yes, because we are describing our self through clay."- Adriana
"Yes, it shares the different values of a culture."- Taylor

"Yes, because you are always taking your own culture and envoking it into your work to create a style."- Abby
"Yes, because you are an expression of a culture." -Conner
"Yes, ceramics shows cultural differences while incorporating various elements of art." -True
"Yes, because it is another outlet to process culture and the outside world." -Liora

"Yes, it shows skills and takes interpretation." -Angel
"Yes, culture can be worked into ceramics.  For example, a lot of culture could have been expressed in the mask piece." -Grace
"Yes, because like most forms of art, artists can only create what they know. " -Bacca
"Yes, ceramics is definitely an art because just like other forms of art it uses personal expression and style." -Samantha

The importance of Sketchbooks

Art is the study of the whole individual~

It stimulates the right side of the brain
to improve left-brain functioning.

We write and sketch ideas to honor the fact that everything in life is a work in progress.  If we can revisit an idea time again we can improve on the initial concept of creation.  If we respond to higher order questions that initiate critical thinking and transferable problem solving, we become better people.  This will help us create inspiring art!

Clay

Clay is an organic material from the earth.

Originally it was made from decomposing rock and minerals over a long period of time with many natural actions such as wind, storms, volcanoes, and earth quakes shifting the earth.  Highly malleable, clay allows us to manipulate its form by hand or machine.

It is transformed through a process with fire.

Bringing clay and glaze to a high temperature removes moisture and melts the piece on a molecular level.  The firing is a transformation from the clay's humble beginnings into a solid work of art.

What ignites a fire in you?

How can this fire assist in your transformation?

What is Cermaics?

 Ceramics is a rich tradition

Historical ceramic works have taught us about the rituals,
customs, and lifestyles of many past cultures.
These ancient cultures created  functional forms for survival, vessels with paintings that revealed stories,
and figurines for rituals and prayer.

The ceramic practice today can be infused with modern methods and contemporary ideas to create visual art that holds meaning to your lives!

Your potential is endless! It takes practice with problem solving, but anything you can think of you can create.
